What Have You Been Reading Lately?

I brought home Grandma and Grandpa's love letters from when Grandpa was in the service and I have been reading the ones Grandma sent to Grandpa for the last few days.  I am thoroughly enjoying reading about the love and admiration Grandma had for Grandpa even early on in their marriage, she was so proud that he had made it to Sgt. very early on in his short millitary career.  She was very happy to have brought home $74.25 for two weeks worth of work at the factory where she made pins for tanks.  She periodically sent Grandpa $5- but saved the rest for their future together (she lived with Grandpa's parents while he was gone).

It does break my heart reading the letters from 1943 asking how much longer Grandpa thought he would be gone because she "missed him so" when I know that he didn't come home until December of 1946.

I also have been getting a chuckle over the entries in Grandpa's journal from 1935 when he would have been Hiney's age.
"Started back to school.
Dad killed an opposom at Savages.
I know 64 out of 64 butterflies."
Mind you Grandpa only finished one more year of school after this (he went through 8th grade).  He never could spell bushes, it was bushs (the rule is add an S right?!), so I was impressed when I saw opposum!  My Dad brought up the bushes vs bushs thing over coffee when he was up on Monday so we had a good laugh over it-especially considering that Grandpa was a keen business and nurseryman after he got back from the war!

My in-laws know I have and am reading the letters and have threatened to burn theirs lol!

So, what have you been reading lately?

  1. So so sweet Kendra -- My mom burned her letters she sent to my dad! mmmm Wonder what was in those letters, but I do have journals my dad wrote mostly the price of gas and weather info -- but if he thought enough to write it all done, I have to keep it :)

  2. Funny.when my hubby was in boot camp I have all our letters saved. I have thought of putting them in binders,,but,,i think leaving them in the original envies makes it so much more special. We have 2 boys age 22 and 18..maybe someday they will want to read them.

I think it is neat that you have those. All that time he was away..very hard I am sure.

  5. Hi Sister,
I didn't know about the letters, that's so cool. What fun to read. I bought this memory book in like 1986 and had my mom fill it out and she was just reading it the other day. And when Anthony was in jr high I bought the same one and filled it out and gave it to him so maybe one day he will cherish it.
