Never Again!

Last night was an interesting experience for me.  Jene called at around 11am and told me that I needed to be at the JH after school because neither he nor the coach was going to be able to be there right away for practice.  I thought OK no problem, after all I was a lunch lady for 7 years how hard could this be.  Plus I know all these "young men" (12-14 year olds), they are all respectful, and the coach or Jene should be there within a few minutes.  Oh my word!!!  I told Jene that next time I will go and finish delivering the mail for him and he can be there with the wrestling team!  He laughed and laughed.  I was serious!  The boys were all wired and punchy and silly and...12-14 year old boys!  I even promised to bring snacks for after the meet today!  I am still bringing snacks but not because they straightened up but because I know that if they are all anything like J and Hiney when that bus gets back into town it will be full of dead JH boys because they will have all "starved" to death!  One of them came up to me during all this and asked "what should we call you, Coach?"  "No, Mrs. Burno will be fine" I told him.  I swear it was hours before Jene got there (actually 30 min) and he had the nerve to say to me last night "oh, come on it couldn't have been that bad" Yah right, he wasn't there...he just threw me to the wolves!!! After I had them all stretch and run a little I couldn't for the life of me remember what Jene had called the move that he wanted them to practice...anyway, I am surprised I didn't have nightmares last night!  I am the mom that spoils them with food, clips their nails before a meet, gathers up and finds out who left what behind, keeps score...anyway, you get the picture, I am not the "coach mom"!  I'm thinking I may need some more flowers again sometime soon!?!

  1. Oooo, you did have a "trial by fire" didn't you? You have to be tough...with a heart...to deal with 12 year old boys! Especially after school...when they are at their most antsy!! Good for you for going into the fray and being a good sport!! Most boys can respect a good intention Mom a mile off, though, and cut some slack! ;-)

  6. You were such a good wife and Mom to stand in like that! Honestly, I can't see me doing that. Glad to hear you took it in stride and learned a valuable lesson. You gave me a smile.:)
